The Story of Starz Puzzles
At sixty-two, Thomas Cholewa concluded a remarkable 35-year career as a commercial artist. Alongside his wife, Terri, both passionate puzzlers, Tom cherished many evenings spent in each other's company, piecing puzzles together. They envisioned this serene routine as the essence of Tom’s retirement. However, in 2016, leveraging his artistic background, Tom had an innovative idea—to design his own puzzle. Starting with a single concept, he meticulously hand drew and cut puzzle pieces from paper. Through countless trials and errors, he ultimately crafted a puzzle design that was uniquely his own. Unbeknownst to him, the shape he created formed a geographic pattern resulting in a tessellation, leading to an endlessly engaging puzzle. The resemblance to a star inspired the name—Starz Puzzles.
In August of 2016, after establishing an LLC and utilizing a small space provided by C&A Marketing Corp, a company he had founded years earlier, Tom embarked on the journey of manufacturing his design. He was determined to distinguish his company from traditional puzzle makers, aiming to create a brand synonymous with high-quality puzzles and exceptional artwork.
Unlike other companies that relied on royalty-free images, Tom pursued original, vibrant artwork from talented artists. The next few years were marked by experimentation with materials, cutting techniques, and packaging designs, alongside crucial elements like sourcing and, most importantly, patents. He sought patents for the unique puzzle shape, the innovative flat sleeve packaging design, and a distinctive manufacturing process that involved cutting the puzzle before applying the artwork—an approach that set him apart from conventional manufacturers. This resulted in a puzzle that was vibrant in color, durable, and water-resistant.

Introducing the all-new, one-of-a-kind star-shaped puzzle pieces from Starz Puzzles. Crafted from genuine 1/4-inch solid Maple hardwood (not plywood, cardboard, or MDF), these robust, solid-wood pieces are revolutionizing the jigsaw puzzle experience.
Setting themselves apart from other wooden jigsaw puzzle makers, Starz Puzzles are meticulously cut using advanced laser technology and individually inspected before undergoing the printing process. The artist’s design or a customer's personalized image is then printed directly onto the laser-cut wood substrate—bypassing paper entirely—employing state-of-the-art UV printers. The outcome? An exceptional, high-quality finish that is unparalleled by any other puzzle manufacturer.
Black Chipboard Box
Not your typical puzzle box, the black Chipboard Box from Starz boasts greater strength than cardboard while remaining thinner. Additionally, Starz reinforces the entire interior of the box to provide extra durability, ensuring your puzzle remains safe and secure.
Instead of simply pouring the puzzle pieces into the box, Starz carefully arranges them flat in layered stacks. Although this approach is slightly more time-consuming, it effectively prevents any broken or chipped pieces. Finally, a top board featuring a reference image is placed over the pieces before the box is sealed.
Black Flat Slim Sleeve
An innovative whose time has come. This patented Starz packaging design ships flat and is fantastic for storing puzzles. Quite thin compared to a regular puzzle box, this flat sleeve is both sturdy and sleek!
Set in a black 1/4" frame between front and back 3/8" casing, your puzzle arrives assembled lying flat in the sleeve. A reusable side clip on each side provides the ultimate puzzle protection.
Starz Heirloom Wood Box
Designed to be handed down from generation to generation, this handmade Ashwood box boasts a puzzle piece mounted in the top right corner, hidden lid hinges, and a recessed magnet to keep the lid shut and secure the puzzle pieces.
Black foam lines the bottom of the box and each puzzle piece is hand-placed inside, protected with a black chipboard topper, and sealed with an outer sleeve. Your puzzle's reference image is displayed on the sleeve's front with a larger image adhered to the inside of the lid. Only available with Starz large, medium, and small puzzles.
